 | Recruiting is far from an exact science. It's a routine task for an HR professional to have to judge how well an applicant will work, often over a period of years, based on little more than an application form and a brief interview. Given the challenges involved, it's amazing how successful standard recruitment techniques can be, but this typical approach does have its pitfalls. In this article we look at what happens when recruitment goes wrong, and what can be done to help prevent it.
The phenomenon of 'mis-hiring' will be familiar to just about anybody involved in the recruitment process. A candidate who appears nearly perfect for a role on paper, and who interviews flawlessly, can suddenly turn out to be quite unsuitable once they're in place. Another classic example of the same kind of effect is the high performer who is rewarded with promotion, only to lose their effectiveness in a new position. | An organisation is more than just the sum of the individuals that make it up. The key to understanding its culture and its structure lies in the relationships between those individuals. The ways that they work together as members of a team can be one of the most important factors in determining the success of the organisation as a whole.
The workings of these relationships are rich and complex, and a full explanation of their workings relies on an understanding of individual skills, experience, knowledge and competencies, among many other factors. Axiom's technology, though, focuses on the behavioural element - the common patterns in a person's approach to their life and work. These behavioural patterns are as important to understanding team relationships as they are in an individual sense. Axiom's Discus is a package designed specifically to describe behaviour at the interpersonal level - the ways in which different personal styles interact with one another, and how these interactions can affect the workings of the team as a whole. In this article, we'll look at some of the principles behind automating the team-building process, and some of the solutions offered by the behavioural approach. | DISC provides an excellent tool for describing a person's general behaviour, and even predicting how that person is likely to react in a range of circumstances. If we have DISC profiles for two different individuals, though, we can go a step further, and look at the ways those two people will interact with one another.
That's the purpose of the Discus 4 'Relationship Assessment'. Given two sets of DISC profiles from your database, Discus 4 will search for important factors in the relationship between the two. It can highlight important areas of synergy between the two, and also suggest likely causes of conflict.
